October Newsletter
Happy October, Room 12 Families!
October is proving to be a great month in our classroom. We are working hard on improving our writing by learning about the different parts of a sentence as well as good punctuation and grammar. We are also working at improving printing and I am noticing a difference in everyone's writing.
Our class loves math! Everyone is getting very good at showing what they know with pictures, numbers and words. They work well together with sharing ideas and everyone did very well working independently on our mid module assessment.
We have been learning about animals in science. This month we will be making bird feeders after we learn about birds. The class was very enthusiatic about learning about what a mammal is and how to identify the sounds different frogs make.
We have had a few SEL lessons with Ms. Cline, Oster's Teacher on Special Assignment. Everyone had a great time talking about their names and why they are important to them.
As you can tell, there is always something fun going on in our classroom! Everyone is very excited about Halloween coming. We will continue to have October themed lessons and we will enjoy celebrating Halloween at school on October 29th. Details about how this will look will come later and I may be asking for some help with supplies.
Thank you for sending such well prepared students to school each day. It is a pleasure to work with each of them every school day.
Best Regards, Mrs. Beckie Gorham
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MY CLASS
- Students need to wear masks in class right now. I have an extra supply of masks on hand always. Hand sanitizer and hand washing is always part of our daily routine!
- Everyone has birthdays! If your child wants to bring treats on their special day, please send something that is prepackaged. It doesn’t have to be a food treat. The kids love pencils, stickers, etc. We currently have nut and grape allergies. All birthday treats should be sent in the morning.
- Please send water with your child. Label the container and I will make certain that everything is returned home at the end of the day. We have an open door policy and if you child needs to go out for water or a break, they can after the have let me know that they are leaving the room. We have a nice courtyard in front of our classroom where I can keep an eye on them.
- Make certain your child knows the plan for afternoon pick up. If that plan changes, please email me or call the school. I always check my emails at the end of the day for that purpose.
- We will not be having formal homework. I will send home a Succeed math book that you child may work on for their own enrichment. Reading at home is the most important thing for a second grader. Have your child read to you and you should read to your child. You will thank me one day.
- Everyone is at different stages of learning. Second grade is a great year to learn to love learning.
Notifications - Wednesday envelopes are back! All of your child’s work for the week will be sent home on Wednesday. Please look it over, sign the envelope and send it back on Thursday.
- I will send a parent email on Thursday of each week. I will include information that you may have already read in the principal’s weekly email and I will have information that is specific to our classroom in the emails.
- If you need to communicate with me, email is the best way to do that right now. I will respond to your emails within twenty four hours. You are also welcome to write me a note and send it to school with your child.
A SECOND GRADER
- A second grader is someone very special. They love to be outside running, jumping, and playing. They need ten hours of sleep and three hours of play.
- They are willing to try anything, often with more enthusiasm than wisdom. They are friendly and interested people and sensitive to their feelings. They are inquisitive and interested in a great variety of things.
- They need to talk things over on a fairly adult level and they will listen to reasonable explanations.
- They are becoming more independent and they enjoy school and going places. They love to collect things and talk a great deal.
- It is a beautiful year. Enjoy every minute as they are only second graders once in your life.
